This post is about several resources I have found helpful over last couple of weeks.
Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts
The first is a book by theologian, missionary, writer and teacher C. Peter Wagner called Discover Your Spiritual Gifts. This 115 page hardcover book provides a wonderful (and scriptural) explanation of just what the spiritual gifts and how we can begin to develop them. But the high point for me was the 135 question self-test designed to help you pinpoint your individual gifts.
I thought my assessment made since. My dominant gifts of knowledge, teaching and wisdom reflected my love of learning and sharing information as I do here in this blog and in my podcast. My subordinate gifts of prophecy, deliverance / spiritual discernment and intercession accurately zeroed in on my personal spiritual gifts and interests.
I think this was pretty remarkable given the fact that the Discover Your Spiritual Gift’s test measures 27 different spiritual gifts ranging from apostle to voluntary poverty.
The second resource I wanted to mention is the Global Prayer School offered by Dick Eastman of Every Home for Christ. This is a free one year program in intercessory prayer. The school provides free video lessons and a free downloadable workbook. The lectures are engaging and down to earth.
Interestly, I had begun the Global Prayer School course before taking the Discover Your Spiritual Gifts test. Also interesting the verse Dick Eastman mentions in lecture three as being the greatest verse in the Bible on divine guidance is the one I use as my twitter banner (@barbaragraver):
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. – Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
Fully Alive by Susie Larson is a workbook for faith based self-healing. The book helps the reader to dig deep through journaling, prayer and reflection. I arrived at an important insight while working with this book regarding my own spiritual / emotional healing.
For a long time I have been trying to do better without acknowledging that some of the issues I struggle with are not fully under my control but things I need to heal. As such, I’ve been including this in my intercession. While this book would be best for those who like to journal, I think it could be helpful even for those who don’t.
Obedience to God
The fourth resource is the Discerning the Voice of God group Bible study by Priscilla Shirer. I have just started this study at my church but it has already made an impression on me. The key according to Shirer is to be obedient to God.
As I reflected on the issue of obedience it occured to me that being obedience isn’t about limitation, is about focus. And I very much need God’s help with focus! I also found that the study helped me identify some of the behaviors (procrastination, unworthiness, discouragement / tendency to give up, distractibility, etc.) that interfere with my ability to be obedient to God. I am adding these to the list of things I am asking God to help me overcome.
The leader kit / video series for Discerning the Voice of God is available on amazon here. Shirer does have a book on the same topic (also called Discerning the Voice of God) as well as a workbook which is designed to go along with the video series.
Overcoming the Opposition
There are two resources I want to mention on this. One by Derek Prince (They Shall Expel Demons) and another by Frank Hammond called Pigs in the Parlor which a good friend in Christ recently lent me. While I realize that deliverance ministry is a controversial topic, I also feel that it is an important one for those of us who have been subject to the deceptive, but very real, occult influences of the New Age.
As Peter said:
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour – 1 Peter 5:8 (KJV)
For a long time I have been struggling with what I feel called to do in the body of Christ – and the closer I get to understanding it, the more opposition I seem to face. In the beginning, coming from the New Age, this felt like a red flag making me wonder if I was on the right path. But I have learned that the reverse is true.
I’ll be talking more on this topic in this week’s New Age to Christian podcast. Hope to “see” you then!
